| Women Farmers Who Are Making Bank In Agritourism |

Often it’s farm women who are first to recognize the opportunity inherent in what is sometimes called agritourism or agritainment. According to a survey conducted by Colorado State While tomorrow may be Derby Day, another annual tradition will be underway in LaRue County – the 4th annual Strawberry Festival at Hinton’s A sixth generation farmer, Jane Eckert grew up with a first hand view of the rigors of farm life “where one night of bad weather can wipe out a year of hard work.” So after picking up a business degree, she left home to work at Atlantic Richfield in L.A. After several years in executive marketing positions, Jane decided to help the family fruit farms in Belleville, Ill., develop agritourism business because “it is very hard to make living selling wholesale crops.”

According to a survey conducted by Colorado State While tomorrow may be Derby Day, another annual tradition will be underway in LaRue County – the 4th annual Strawberry Festival at Hinton’s Orchard & Farm Market. Jeremy and Joanna Hinton purchased the farm in 2006 and since then have invited thousands of their closest friends to join in the fun, offering not just fresh fruits and vegetables, but a whole host of activities for the family to enjoy on this working farm.

According to a survey conducted by Colorado State University in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Agriculture, 13.2 million visitors experienced Colorado agritourism in 2006, contributing $2.2 billion to the state economy.
